It was based on the W.12 biplane that it was designed to replace. The monoplane configuration created less drag, and thus gave greater speed Austria-Hungary placed an order for 25 W.29s, powered by 185 hp (138 kW) Austro-Daimler engines, to be built under license by Ufag at Budapest.
