Michael Giddings
| Air Marshal Sir Michael Giddings KCB CBE DFC AFC (deceased) As a Wing Commander, was Commanding Officer of No.57 Squadron from 3rd January 1959 to 19th May 1960. At this time the squadron was based at RAF Honington and had just begun to operate the Victor in the Medium Bomber Role. During the Second World War, he had flown Spitfires with No.122 Sqn patrolling the Firth of Forth. In July 1942 he flew his Spitfire from HMS Eagle to Malta and provided air support for the Pedestal Convoys with No.246 Sqn. He flew with No.118 Sqn during the Allied offensive after D-Day, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, latterly commanding No.129 Sqn. He had scored 4 victories and many more probables and damaged during the war. Post war he became a test pilot for three years then took Staff roles until commanding No.57 Sqn on the Handley Page Victor. After this he took more Staff positions until retirement in 1976. After retiring from the RAF he worked with the Department of the Environment from more than a decade. He died on 5th April 2009. |
